Rushaga vs Buhoma Gorilla Trekking Experience. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and choosing where to start your trek is one of the most important decisions you will make on your Uganda safari. Two sectors rise above the rest in popularity and reputation: Rushaga in the south and Buhoma in the north. Both promise a life-changing hour in the presence of habituated gorilla families, yet they deliver remarkably different experiences in terms of terrain, gorilla families, accommodation options, and overall atmosphere. At Frena Adventures, we help travellers weigh these options every day, and this guide will give you everything you need to make the right call for your adventure.
Buhoma is the oldest and most established entry point into Bwindi, sitting on the park’s northern edge. It is roughly a 9–10 hour drive from Kampala, often routed through Queen Elizabeth National Park for a classic Uganda safari combination. Buhoma’s accessibility is well-known — the roads are generally passable year-round — which is partly why it became the first sector opened to tourism back in 1993.
Rushaga, on the other hand, occupies the park’s southern tip near the town of Kisoro. It is roughly a 9–11 hour drive from Kampala or about two hours from Kigali in Rwanda. This proximity to Rwanda makes it an excellent choice for travellers entering or exiting through Kigali, making it a natural fit for combined Uganda and Rwanda gorilla itineraries. Many of our guests at Frena Adventures opt for a Kigali–Rushaga–Buhoma routing to experience both sides of the park on one trip.
This is where the difference becomes most significant. Buhoma hosts four habituated gorilla groups: Mubare (the oldest habituated family, first tracked in 1991), Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Katwe. These are smaller groups in total, meaning fewer trekking permits per day and a more intimate, quieter forest atmosphere. Buhoma is where Uganda’s gorilla trekking story began, and there is an undeniable historical weight to tracking the Mubare group, which has been visited by humans for over three decades.
Rushaga is Bwindi’s powerhouse sector when it comes to gorilla family diversity. It hosts the largest number of habituated gorilla groups in the park, including Nshongi (one of the largest families), Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Rwigi, and Mucunguzi. Most critically, Rushaga is the only sector in Uganda that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which allows you to spend four hours — instead of the standard one hour — with a semi-habituated family as researchers work to accustom them to human presence. This is a rare, raw, and deeply emotional encounter unavailable anywhere else in the country.
If tracking multiple gorilla groups over consecutive days is your goal, Rushaga is unmatched. You can read more details about this sector in our dedicated guide on gorilla trekking in Rushaga Sector Bwindi.
Both sectors involve hiking through dense equatorial rainforest, and both can be challenging. That said, the terrain differs noticeably.
Buhoma’s trails descend into river valleys and then climb steeply through thick vegetation. Treks here can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. The landscape is dramatic and wildly beautiful, with ancient trees draped in moss and a forest canopy that rarely lets in direct sunlight. You can explore the full character of this entry point in our article on gorilla trekking in Buhoma Sector Bwindi.
Rushaga is located at a higher altitude, and the terrain is more open in patches but equally steep. Some trails lead through bamboo forest and open ridgelines before dropping back into dense jungle. The higher elevation means temperatures are slightly cooler, which many trekkers appreciate. Physically, both sectors demand a reasonable level of fitness, and we always recommend reviewing our guide on Uganda gorilla trekking in low season to understand how the rains affect trail conditions.
Buhoma has a longer history of tourism and therefore boasts a wider and more established range of accommodation. Options range from Buhoma Lodge and Mahogany Springs to mid-range and budget guesthouses in the village. The community around Buhoma is well-developed, and evenings often include cultural dance performances from the Batwa or Bakiga communities.
Rushaga has grown rapidly in recent years and now offers excellent choices including Gorilla Safari Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Camp, and a range of community-run bandas. The lodge scene here is more intimate and the surroundings feel wilder and less touristed. For travellers seeking seclusion alongside gorilla trekking, Rushaga holds a slight edge. Our team at Frena Adventures can help you book the best-fit accommodation through our Uganda safari planning page.
Both sectors share the same official Uganda Wildlife Authority permit price of USD 800 per person for non-East African residents (as of 2026). The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga costs USD 1,500 per person. Permit availability differs between sectors — Buhoma, being the most famous, books up fastest and requires advance reservations, sometimes 6–12 months ahead during peak season. Rushaga typically has slightly better availability given its higher number of gorilla groups and permits.
