Why Uganda for Gorilla Trekking?
Uganda is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas — a population of around 1,000 individuals scattered across the ancient forests of the Albertine Rift. Of these, the majority live within the misty ridges of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has sheltered these magnificent primates for centuries.
Compared to neighbouring Rwanda, Uganda offers a distinctly different gorilla trekking experience. The landscape is wilder, the forest denser, the lodges more varied in price point, and the overall atmosphere more adventurous. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is also spectacular, but Uganda's biodiversity is unmatched — on a primate safari in Uganda, you might track gorillas one morning and chimpanzees in Kibale Forest the next.
Uganda also pairs beautifully with Big Five wildlife safaris in Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth National Park — making it possible to combine the thrill of big-game game drives with one of the most intimate wildlife encounters on Earth.
"Standing in front of a mountain gorilla is not a wildlife sighting. It is a conversation across millions of years of shared ancestry."
Where Do Uganda Gorilla Treks Take Place?
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is Uganda's gorilla trekking heartland. Sprawling across 321 km² in the southwestern corner of the country, it shelters over 20 habituated gorilla families spread across four main sectors: Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija. Each sector offers a different trekking terrain and atmosphere — from the well-established trails of Buhoma to the dramatic crater-ridge hikes of Nkuringo.
Frena Adventures operates in all four sectors, meaning we can match you to the right area based on your fitness level, accommodation preferences, and the type of gorilla experience you seek. Explore our Uganda gorilla trekking tours to see which sector suits you best.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Uganda's smaller gorilla park sits in the Virunga volcanic mountains on the border of Rwanda and DRC. Only one gorilla family — the Nyakagezi group — is habituated here, making permits more limited. However, Mgahinga offers the unique opportunity to also track the rare golden monkey and to hike the towering Virunga volcanoes. It is a sublime choice for travellers who also plan a side trip into Rwanda.

View TourWhen Is the Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
Uganda's equatorial climate means gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year — but two dry seasons offer the most comfortable conditions:
🌤️ Peak Season (June – September)
- Driest months with firm trails and clear skies
- Best photography conditions — golden-hour light filters through the canopy
- High demand: book gorilla permits and lodges at least 6 months in advance
- Ideal for combining a gorilla trek with a Big Five safari in Murchison Falls
🌄 Short Dry Season (December – February)
- Fewer crowds and a more intimate trekking atmosphere
- Slightly cooler temperatures at Bwindi's high altitude
- Good for budget-conscious travellers — some lodges offer lower-season rates
- Permits are easier to secure with 3–4 months' notice
The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) are not without their charm. Lush, vivid-green forests, fewer tourists, and the same extraordinary gorilla encounters await — though trails can be muddy and leech-lined. Experienced trekkers often prefer this period for its moody atmosphere and sense of true wilderness.
Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permits: Everything You Need to Know
A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and currently costs USD $800 per person for foreign non-residents. The permit grants you entry to the national park and one hour with a habituated gorilla family — one of the most regulated and carefully managed wildlife encounters anywhere in the world.
Key things to know about gorilla permits in Uganda:
- Permits must be secured well in advance — popular families can be booked out months ahead, especially in peak season.
- Only 8 people are allowed to visit a single gorilla family per day. Uganda has over 20 habituated families, giving it the highest total permit availability in East Africa.
- The permit price includes the park entry fee, ranger-guided trekking, and the one-hour gorilla encounter itself.
- Frena Adventures handles all permit procurement on your behalf as part of every gorilla trekking safari package, removing the administrative complexity entirely.
- If a trek is cancelled due to rain or gorilla movement, a refund or reschedule is typically arranged through UWA — our team manages this for you seamlessly.
How Difficult Is Uganda Gorilla Trekking?
This is the question most first-time gorilla trekkers ask — and the honest answer is: it depends on the day, the gorilla family, and your fitness level. Bwindi is a genuine rainforest. Its terrain is steep, muddy, and at times impenetrable — the name is quite literal. Treks can range from a 45-minute stroll to a full-day expedition covering several kilometres of difficult terrain.
That said, the trekking is accessible to most reasonably fit adults. The key is preparation. Here is what Frena Adventures recommends:
Pre-Trek Preparation Tips
- Walk on hilly terrain for at least 4–6 weeks before your safari
- Pack lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and waterproof gaiters
- Invest in a quality pair of broken-in hiking boots with ankle support
- Hire a porter — they carry your bag, assist you on steep sections, and the fee directly supports local communities
- Bring garden gloves: gripping thorny vegetation is unavoidable
- Carry at least 2 litres of water per person
- Altitude at Bwindi reaches over 2,400 m — acclimatise if coming from sea level
What to Expect During Your Gorilla Trek
The morning of your gorilla trek begins early — typically with a 6:30–7:00 AM briefing at the park headquarters. Rangers introduce your gorilla family, explain the strict rules of engagement (a 7-metre distance, no flash photography, no visiting if you are sick), and answer any questions. Then the trek begins.
Once your trackers — who have been in the forest since dawn following the gorillas — radio in the family's location, the tempo changes. You are led off the main trail into the dense undergrowth. Suddenly, the forest goes quiet, and then you see them.
"The silverback looked up at us, then back at his infant playing in the ferns. In that moment, we understood that we were the visitors in his world — and we felt deeply grateful to be there."
You spend exactly one hour with the family. Cameras click softly. Nobody speaks above a whisper. Gorillas nurse their young, play, forage, and occasionally glance at the strange two-legged creatures watching them. The hour ends too soon — it always does.

Conservation: Why Your Trek Matters
Mountain gorillas are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List — but unlike almost every other great ape, their population has been growing. From fewer than 650 individuals in the 1980s to over 1,000 today, this recovery is largely the result of dedicated conservation efforts — and gorilla trekking tourism plays a direct role.
Revenue from gorilla permits funds ranger salaries, anti-poaching patrols, community development projects, and veterinary care for habituated families. When you book a Uganda gorilla trekking trip with Frena Adventures, you become part of this conservation story. We are proud to work alongside local guides, porters, and lodge staff whose livelihoods — and whose commitment to protecting these forests — depend on responsible tourism.
We also follow strict low-impact trekking protocols: group size limits, no flash photography, a mandatory 7-metre distance from the gorillas, and no visiting if you have flu-like symptoms. Gorillas share approximately 98% of their DNA with humans — respiratory diseases that are mild for us can be life-threatening for them.
